Colour The trailer has a range of dull colours in it as you would expect. Lowkey lighting in dark rooms and land dull lighting even at the day time. This is done to set set the mood of the horror trailer. To insinuate that the supernatural monster is haunting the house creating a dark atmosphere within the place. Editing The trailer starts off with slow paced cuts and gradually increases in speed. At the near end of the trailer there's rapid fast quick cuts that are used. This is done to create excitement in the trailer to build it up like many trailers not only in horror. Camera There are many two shots and mid shots used at the start of the trailer used for the introduction of the characters and equillibrium. This is then followed up with a mid shot of the antagonist for about 1 second. This could have been done to show a glimpse of the devastating demon/spirit which is haunting the boy. There is also a point of view shot of someone walking from the corridor into the room. This could have been done to present to the audience the house and the room that has been vandalised. We last see the antagonist with a two shot close up behind one of the primary characters. This was used to present to the audience the barbaric demon appearance of the antagonist for only a split second. The aggressive facial expression you can witness shows that the creature is ferocious. Sound The trailer starts off with the sound of a timer. This could connote the time that they had left where everything was normal. The timer sound stops after the lady stops the horse rocking. The music within the trailer links with the scenes with the music becoming loud and fast during the scenes where something is about to happen. Like in the scene where the antagonist was shown. Mood and Styling The trailer made me feel excited to see the movie. The point of view shot that was used made it feel like I was in the house going into the room. The overall mood of the trailer was dark as the boy is being haunted personally and not the whole family, which can make you feel sympathetic to the boy. Location In the home of the protagonist at the night and day. MISE EN SCENE
Lighting There are some lowkey lighting scenes in the trailer, but dominated by some normal lighting due to many of the scenes being in the day which could have been done to avoid showing the best scenes. This could connote that the worst is yet to come in the movie. Setting The setting is mainly in the house which could connote that they have been trapped by the demon/spirit and they can't leave the house and have to deal with the antagonist until they can find a solution. Costume The antagonist has a red and black face with snow white eyes. Props The daunting red and black face could connote that the creature is from a hellish realm. The colours black and red insinuate the death and blood. This involves killing which is what beings consumed by a hellish presence tend to do.
Ratings The movie trailer was great because of the jump scares and the mood was feeling like a true horror trailer. However the trailer possibly could have revealed too much of the story. They exposed the identity of the antagonist. So because of that I'll give the trailer a 3.5 star rating
Film Title: The conjuring 2 Release Date: June 2016 Director: James Wan Film Info: The conjuring 2 is a 2016 American horror film and the sequel of The Conjuring (2013)
SYNOPSIS:In 1976, paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren document the Amityville murders at the Amityville house, to determine if a demonic presence was truly responsible for Ronald DeFeo Jr mass murdering his family on November 13, 1974 and the subsequent haunting incident involving the Lutz family. During a seance, Lorraine is drawn into a vision where she relives the murders and discovers a demonic nun figure, before seeing Ed being fatally impaled. After a struggle, Lorraine is able to break out of the vision. Production/Financing Company: Atomic Monster Productions/RatPac entertainment/The Safran Company
Colour Dull colours are used in this trailer lowkey lighting is used at some points of this trailer. This could connote that the house is shadowed in darkness. Editing As with a lot of horror film trailers. The trailer starts off with long cut scenes at the beginning and then proceeds with faster cuts at the end of the trailer. The trailer also uses a fade technique where the screen will go black before making the transition to the next scene. This could have been used to connote that the house there is clouded in darkness and little girl who is being haunted is being surrounded in that cloud of darkness by the evil nun spirit. Camera There are many two shots, close ups and long-shots used to set the tone of the trailer. There is a long-shot of the antagonist in the hall way. This could have been sued to show the all of the antagonist and present to the audience the clothes that it is wearing. This revealed that it was somewhat a spirit that looks like a nun. There is also a close up of the antagonist with one of the characters. With the close up we can see the face of the antagonist more clearly. We can see the pale lifeless face of the thing. Sound In the movie you can hear the screams of the child that is being haunted many times. This connotes that she is being targeted by the antagonist and is the main victim. However the mother was also targeted by the antagonist and this could connote that the spirit likes to target female victims as in the trailer you could see the antagonist terrorise the female characters and no male character. Mood and Styling The trailer did make me feel scared when I first watched it. The jump scares were very good and the overall mood of the trailer was very dark and disheartening Location A house with some destroyed walls
MISE EN SCENE
Lighting The lighting was relatively dark with a few dark scenes this is used to create the dark atmosphere.
Setting The setting is mainly in the house which can connote that the victims are trapped inside the house and cannot get away from the menacing spirit that is haunting them.
Costume The antagonist can be seen wearing a nun outfit. The antagonist has a pale face with large black blemishes around both her/its eyes with bright yellow pupils Props The pale face of the spirit can connote that it is now lifeless and all human emotions that it may have held before is now all gone. The yellow eyes could connote that there is very, very little light left in the antagonist as that is the only bright feature of the spirit. Rating The movie trailer was interesting as it created a lot of suspense and had good jump scares. It also didn't reveal too much of the story. However the antagonist was revealed and the movie shows you what happens at the start so you don't even need to watch the beginning of the movie to understand. I'll give this a rating of 3.5
Film Title: Ouija Origin Of Evil Release Date: October 2016 Director: Mike Flanagan Film Info: Ouija Origin Of Evil is a 2016 supernatural horror film SYNOPSIS:In 1965 Los Angeles, a widowed mother and her two daughters add a new stunt to bolster their séance scam business and unwittingly invite authentic evil into their home. When the youngest daughter is overtaken by the merciless spirit, this small family confronts unthinkable fears to save her and send her possessor back to the other side.
Colour Dull lowkey lighting used in the areas of the house. Normal lighting in scenes out in the daylight. Can be used to connote that the house is the dark place and outside is light where as usually it is the opposite.
Editing The whole trailer was very fast paced due to the quick rapid cuts that were used in it. This could be used to get the audience in the mood and it is something that typically occurs in horror trailers.
Camera There were many, many camera shots used on the antagonist/character. There were medium close ups and close ups used to present the little girls face when she is being possessed by the spirit/demon this could have been used to connote that it happens very frequently and the spirit/demon is very much so ready to cause havoc to everyone in the household. Sound The music used in the trailer did vary. At the beginning the trailer used some relaxing Sunday morning music and then changed to more epic and daunting music you would find in most horror movie trailers. This could have been used to set the tone of the equilibrium and disequilibrium that we witnessed in the trailer. Mood and Styling The overall mood of the movie was dark with some disturbing scenes added towards it.
MISE EN SCENE
Lighting There was a lot of low-key lighting used in the movie. Especially during the scenes with the house. This could connote that the house is in a dark place at the moment and the only light you will find during this time is the light outside as the spirit/demon has overshadowed the house to look black.
Setting The setting is primarily in the house which could connote that the all the horror that takes place is in the house which is a contrast to what a house is primarily supposed to do which is keep you safe from the world outside. Costume The antagonist is a black ghostly silhouette being which can physically touch you. Ratings The movie trailer was very much interesting as I first saw it on an ad and I didn't skip it due to it engaging me. However this trailer also reveals too much of the story and you only need to watch the ending to watch the whole movie as you will already know what happens in the beginning and what the antagonist is. For this I will give the movie a 3 star rating.
Film Title: Don't Breathe Release Date: August 2016 Director: Fede Alvarez Film Info: Don't Breathe is an America Thriller Horror film
SYNOPSIS:Rocky (Jane Levy), Alex and Money are three Detroit thieves who get their kicks by breaking into the houses of wealthy people. Figuring he's an easy target, the trio invades the man's secluded home in an abandoned neighbourhood. Finding themselves trapped inside, the young intruders must fight for their lives after making a shocking discovery about their supposedly helpless victim. Production/Financing Company: Ghost house Pictures
Colour Dark colours are used in this trailer throughout the movie this creates a dark feeling from the movie.
Editing The trailer started off with slow long cuts and then as the trailer progressed the cuts started becoming more rapid and fast paced. This could have been used to connote that the blind man is in fact insane and will go to extreme lengths to kill anyone who trespasses.
Camera There are a lost of close ups in used in the movie trailer to present the facial expression of the characters. This could connote that there are many different emotions that the characters are going through in the movie trailer. There are also close ups of the antagonist the blind man. This could have been used to present the face of the antagonist and his eyes which are completely closed. Sound There is a lot of quiet scenes in the movie trailer to put more emphasis on the title 'Dont Breathe' The quiet scenes can be used to connote that any little sound that you make the blind man will be able to hear it and will slaughter you. This gives a sort of supernatural feeling to the blind man as his hearing is almost that of what yo wold see in a superhero movie. Mood and Styling The overall mood of the trailer is haunting and you don't feel much sympathy for the trespassers as they tried to steal and vandalise a blind mans house.
MISE EN SCENE
Lighting There is a lot of dark low key lighting used in the movie as the house that the blind guys lives in is almost pitch black. This creates suspense as you don't know if anything is going to happen at any moment in the dark.
Setting The setting is mainly in the home of the blind man. This could be used to connote how trapped the trespassers were and they are finding it troublesome to leave without the blind man trying to kill them.
Costume The blind man is just wearing a tank top with jeans. Props The props used are a gun that the blind man took from the trespasser he killed. Ratings The trailer was action packed and it did create some frightening scenes. The biggest problem of the trailer was that it revealed almost everything and all that you will need to see now is how they escape the house. It revealed some of the methods the trespassers used to try and escape and it revealed the method the antagonist used to try and find them. Due to this I will give he trailer a 2.5 rating
